Racetrack makes news in Rome

Chariot racing in Colchester finally made it into Roman newspapers 2000 years late!

Local reports suggest that the ancient race track next to Abbeyfields will be turned into a permanent tourist attraction.

The site was discovered during excavations at the Garrison and archaeologists have worked out the route of the 940 metre long race track.

It is good to see that Colchester Council is recognising the importance of our local heritage and are prepared to fund schemes to preserve the archaeology.

Channel Fours Time Team is planning to make a documentary special about the site and will fund four extra digs and are hoping that they will find more artefacts such as the bronze lampstand, childs ring and miniature jet bear discovered at the Abbeyfields site.
